Good Rains for St Lucia

Good rains over the past few weeks have led to the uMkhuze river flooding thus causing a rise in the St Lucia Estuary this coupled with the last spring tides and large swells which also brought the sea over into the lake system. However the mouth still remains closed due to the fact that the area has been experiencing drought for the last 7 years so much more rain is needed before the lake will open up to the sea again.

hippo cruise

Last year two barges broke away from their tow lines due to heavy seas and ran aground at Cape Vidal. They were successfully removed from the beach and scuttled out at sea at a depth of 30m.

These two barges have become artificial reefs and after only 10 weeks forty six species of fish have been recorded on these wrecks. Two rare species, the Frasier’s Goat Fish and Tiger Angel Fish have also been spotted on the wrecks.

Currently the only divers allowed on the wrecks are those involved with research and monitoring. The wrecks should be open to the public by January next year thus making Cape Vidal a new dive site along the north coast.

Fishing Report

This nice Red Steenbras was caught by Barend Verster, the skipper of Wave Dancer charters.

Fishing has been good the past week with good catches of springer, kingfish, cob and grunter coming out of the lake on drop shot as well as bait.

Two things to take note of please be aware that the cob are currently protected and are to be released if caught else heavy fines will be issued. The crocodiles are hungry so do not go into the water and stand well away from the waters edge especially when landing fish.

Shore angling in the surf was slow due to heavy seas and dirty water after the Umfolozi river came down in flood. As the water cleared a number of grunter were caught. As for deep sea fishing the dorado have disappeared and natal snoek have come on the bight which is very uncommon this time of year as they are usually only caught as of June.
